Economic Contribution

The ACT Clubs Industry is a significant contributor to the ACT economy and a supporter of local communities. There are 49 clubs operating in the ACT. This is the smallest number of clubs in any Australian jurisdiction and has decreased from 57 in 2011.

Despite accounting for just 1 per cent of clubs in Australia, clubs in the ACT accounted for 4 per cent of the economic contribution of clubs at the national level. While total revenue has fallen, revenue per club has increased since 2011. $311m (2011) – $274m (2015).

$39 million in social contribution

The social contribution of clubs in the ACT was $790,000 per club and consisted of community donations , subsidised access to facilities and volunteering. Direct support $9 million, Subsidised Facilities $25 million and Volunteer effort $5 million.

$9 million in cash and in-kind donations

Clubs in the ACT contributed over $175,000 per club to community causes in cash and in-kind contributions in 2015. This is the highest level in the Australian analysed on a per club basis. $8.4m (2011) – $8.7m (2015).

1745 people employed

Clubs in the ACT employed over 1,700 people or about 36 per club. While employment was down on 2011, ACT clubs employed more people on average than clubs in any other state or territory analysed as part of the 2015 KPMG Clubs Census. 2,303 (2011) – 1745 (2015).

327,000 Members in the ACT

Clubs provide service to a large number of members in the ACT. While the number of clubs in the ACT and overall membership has fallen since 2011, the average club in the ACT has 6,700 members, which is up on 2011. 341,000 (2011) – 327,000 (2015).

$73 million in taxes paid

Clubs are significant contributors to Government revenues in the form of taxes. The total tax paid by clubs in the ACT has fallen since 2011 (as clubs have closed) in total and on a per club basis. $87 million (2011) – $73 million (2015).
