10/22/2019The ACT community, which local clubs serve so proudly, recently had the chance to show their appreciation by casting a vote for the city’s best: Harmonie German Club, Eastlake Gungahlin and Gungahlin Lakes Golf & Community Club each took home the top People’s Choice Awards at Monday night’s 2019 Clubs and Community Awards.
“Each of the Best Clubs honourees took home multiple awards on the night, which demonstrate the range of activities they are involved in to support their local community,” ClubsACT Chief Executive, Gwyn Rees said.
Harmonie German Club was also recognised for its contribution to Arts & Culture, while Gungahlin Lakes Golf and Community Club won the Best Beer Selection Award.
Eastlake Gungahlin was successful in the Best Functions and Events Category and highly commended for Best New Venue.
“The Eastlake Group was honoured for its commitment to Disability, Welfare and Social Inclusion through its support of Roundabout Canberra which rehomes essential baby items and equipment for those in need and staff member Trish Abdilla was called to the stage as Outstanding Service Employee,” Mr Rees said.
Twenty six winners were recognised during the event for their commitment to providing Canberrans with outstanding hospitality venues, delivering service excellence, and making a very real difference in people’s lives.
“Congratulations to every club that was nominated and each category winner,” Mr Rees praised.
Long-time supporter of the ACT club movement, Max Mercer received the President’s Award at Monday night’s event. Max was ClubsACT President for eight years and has served as an Executive member of Clubs Australia and Clubs Australia Industrial. He is the current President and Chair of The Mawson Club and has been involved with the Raiders Group since 1990.
“The breadth of the contribution our clubs make is exceptional. They not only help employ and develop Canberrans and provide a welcoming space for people to socialise, but they are dedicated to supporting local sport, assisting people dealing with challenges such as gambling, making our city more inclusive and providing programs and funding that help some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Our awards reflect the scope of the work ACT clubs do each and every day.”
